Korea and Japan can get closer through food, say cartoonists

Two well-known authors of food-themed comic books representing Korea and Japan shared their opinion during a meeting in Seoul on Wednesday that the two Asian neighbors can get closer through each other’s delicious food.

Huh Young-man, known for the Korean comic book series “Sikgaek,” and Masayuki Kusumi, author of the Japanese series “The Solitary Gourmet,” met at a traditional Korean hanok house in central Seoul to casually talk about the food cultures of the two countries.

The meeting was organized by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as part of its efforts to promote tourism exchanges between the two countries and help revitalize the local tourism industry.

During the hour-long talk, the two artists discussed their favorite Korean and Japanese food, “honbab” culture, taboos related to food, side dishes and ingredients. “Honbab” refers to eating a meal alone, often in a solitary or independent dining setting.

“No one fights while eating delicious food, right?” Masayuki said. “I feel that there are many differences in food culture between Korea and Japan even though they are (geographically) close, and I think we will get along better if we eat delicious food from each side and get to know about each other’s food culture.”

Huh agreed, saying he believes food can serve as an opportunity to expand exchanges between the two countries.

“Food is a medium that connects people and culture as one,” he said. “I think food is the reason for the urge to travel.”

“Sikgaek” is a 27-volume comic book series that introduces delicious food, ingredients and recipes from all over Korea.

“The Solitary Gourmet” follows a man who works as an imported goods distributor as he indulges in culinary adventures across various eateries in Tokyo alone in his spare time.

Masayuki will visit Seochon and Samcheong-dong, old neighborhoods popular with locals and foreign tourists alike in Seoul, during his remaining period of stay in South Korea, according to the ministry.

He will introduce must-visit restaurants there through video, which will be used by the culture minister to promote Korean food and tourism among Japanese fans of the “The Solitary Gourmet.”

Klinsmann to return to S. Korea after Europe trip following schedule change

Jurgen Klinsmann, beleaguered head coach of the South Korean men’s national football team, is set to return to Seoul this week after a recent European trip following a last-minute schedule change, officials said Wednesday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced Klinsmann will return to South Korea with the rest of the home-based members of the national team Thursday afternoon. The Taegeuk Warriors played two friendly matches in Europe this month, with a goalless draw against Wales last Thursday in Cardiff followed by a 1-0 squeaker over Saudi Arabia on Tuesday in Newcastle, England. It was Klinsmann’s first win as South Korea’s bench boss.

Klinsmann had initially planned to stay put in Europe to check on South Korean internationals plying their trade there before returning to South Korea. His initial itinerary included a trip to Germany to watch Bayern Munich’s South Korean defender Kim Min-jae at the weekend.

However, following a meeting with his backroom staff Wednesday, Klinsmann decided to return to South Korea immediately, according to the KFA. Klinsmann will check on players in the domestic K League before putting together the next edition of the national team for the October international match window, the KFA added. South Korea will host Tunisia on Oct. 13 and Vietnam on Oct. 17.

The KFA said Klinsmann will speak with the media Thursday after landing at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul.

Though the KFA didn’t give reasons for the about-face, Klinsmann likely made the switch with growing criticism over his work habits in mind.

The German-born, U.S.-based coach has been heavily criticized by South Korean fans for spending more time in his Los Angeles home than in South Korea, despite his earlier pledge to live in his new host country and learn about the new culture here as quickly as possible. While overseas, Klinsmann has moonlighted as a European football analyst for ESPN and attended the draw for the UEFA Champions League in Monaco.

Klinsmann has claimed that he can still work effectively for the South Korean national team without being in the country and he has capable assistants in his staff who can handle K League scouting.

A five-match winless skid, with three draws and two losses, to begin his South Korea tenure only gave Klinsmann’s critics more ammunition, as they accused the coach of not trying to unearth hidden gems in the K League and of wasting his time watching already-established players in Europe.

(LEAD) Seoul shares nearly flat ahead of U.S. inflation data

South Korean stocks finished nearly flat Wednesday as investors stayed on their toes ahead of U.S. inflation data, a key indicator of the Fed’s upcoming rate-setting decision. The local currency fell against the U.S. greenback.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 1.88 points, or 0.07 percent, to finish at 2,534.70. Trading volume was moderate at 411.2 million shares worth 9.09 trillion won (US$6.83 billion), with decliners outnumbering gainers 549 to 321.

Individuals sold a net 184.4 billion won worth of local shares, while foreign and institutional investors scooped up a combined net 165.3 billion won.

The upcoming U.S. consumer price index for August, slated to be released later in the day, weighed heavily on Wall Street overnight as the data is expected to provide clues about the Federal Reserve’s tightening policy before the monetary policy meeting next week.

All three U.S. stock indexes closed lower Tuesday (U.S. time), with the Nasdaq tumbling more than 1 percent amid a slide for technology stocks, including Apple Inc. and Oracle.

“On Wall Street, tech shares led the decline due to rising oil prices and increasing pressure on interest rates,” said Noh Dong-gil, an analyst from Shinhan Securities Co. “Investors will likely maintain their cautious mode until the Fed’s rate-setting meeting next week.”

In Seoul, market heavyweights finished in mixed territory.

Tech shares were among the winners, with Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, gaining 0.57 percent to 70,900 won, and its rival SK hynix climbing 1.54 percent to 118,500 won.

Top mobile carrier SK Telecom rose 1.53 percent to 49,700 won, and No. 2 KT Corp. added 1.46 percent to 31,250 won.

Automakers were bullish as industry leader Hyundai Motor and its labor union reached a tentative wage agreement without a strike. Shares of Hyundai Motor jumped 1.93 percent to 189,800 won, and those of its smaller affiliate Kia advanced 1.03 percent to 78,500 won.

But battery and chemical companies went south, with major chemicals maker LG Chem losing 3.4 percent to 540,000 won and leading battery maker LG Energy Solution falling 1 percent to 494,500 won.

Leading gamemaker NCSOFT skidded 1.62 percent to 243,400 won, and Netmarble tumbled 12 percent to 46,550 won.

Retailers finished in negative territory as Shinsegae declined 1.18 percent to 208,500 won, and Hyundai Department Store dropped 2.82 percent to 65,400 won.

The Korean won ended at 1,330 won against the U.S. dollar, down 2.2 won from Tuesday’s close.

Bond prices, which move inversely to yields, closed higher. The yield on three-year Treasurys fell 1.0 basis point to 3.853 percent and the return on the benchmark five-year government bonds dropped 1.0 basis point to 3.880 percent.

CertiK and OKLink Collaborate to Introduce Freeze Asset Request (FAR) Standardization for Enhanced Fund Security

Singapore, Sept. 12, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —  OKLink, a leading Web 3.0 on-chain data provider under OKG Technology Holdings Limited (1499.HK), and CertiK, the frontrunner in blockchain security, today announced a collaboration pioneering the Freeze Asset Request (FAR) technical standard. This initiative seeks to simplify incident reporting pathways and expedite the freezing of stolen assets.

The two parties will deepen their ongoing collaboration in risk control, and data compliance areas, including but not limited to exploring data labeling standards and standardizing information interaction processes. CertiK and OKLink are committed to enhancing data accuracy and coverage, advancing the secure development of the Web 3.0 industry.

During the summit, CertiK hosted a panel discussion titled “How the Community Improves Security for Web 3.0 Users.” This panel featured experts including Professor Kang Li of CertiK, Jeffrey Ren, Chairman and CEO of OKG Tech, and Professor Yang Liu of Nanyang Technological University. They explored collaborative measures by which the industry can bolster user asset protection.

Jeffrey Ren noted that security incidents in Web 3.0 are all too frequent, with bad actors often attempting to transfer compromised assets to exchanges. In response, affected parties request the exchange to freeze these stolen funds. Historically, each exchange has independently developed its own procedures for processing such fund-locking requests, resulting in a diverse set of technical requirements and documentation expectations. In this case, the communication between victims and exchanges is often lengthy, while the window of time to retrieve funds is very short. There is a pressing need for the Web 3.0 community, including exchanges and security enterprises, to formulate a consistent fund-freezing blueprint, to the benefit of both victims and exchanges. Given OKLink’s expertise in blockchain analysis, partnering with security leaders like CertiK is a catalyst for positive shifts in the Web 3.0 sphere.

Professor Kang Li, Chief Security Officer of CertiK, introduced CertiK’s ongoing collaboration with OKLink and other exchanges to champion the FAR initiative. This initiative is directed at standardizing fund-freezing procedures, and CertiK invites more firms to join this movement. By doing so, victims can be better directed on liaising with exchanges during crises. In addition to standardizing fund-freezing procedures, CertiK and OKLink are also working collaboratively to establish a universal transaction label taxonomy, which will unify investigation labels from various data providers. Since 2022, CertiK has detected over 1,100 security incidents involving a total loss of $4.8 billion. Leveraging CertiK’s extensive database resources, the company’s suite of SaaS security products have been actively monitoring and tracking over two billion wallets and smart contract addresses, providing real-time comprehensive assessments of security trends for nearly 12,000 projects. To date, CertiK has audited over 4,100 Web 3.0 projects, identified nearly 70,000 vulnerabilities in blockchain code, and safeguarded digital assets valued at nearly $370 billion. CertiK is poised to lead the industry towards enhanced security standardization and collaboration.

This is the latest step in OKLink and CertiK’s strong professional association. Both firms share the vision of raising the standards of security and transparency in Web 3.0. This strategic partnership is a significant milestone in their combined mission, and comes with major benefits for the broader Web 3.0 industry.

Io Therapeutics, Inc., Announces Publication of Data on a Novel Compound Promoting Anti-Cancer Immune Responses

SPRING, Texas, Sept. 12, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Io Therapeutics, Inc., announced today the publication in Scientific Reports – Nature Publishing Group, of results from studies done with the company’s novel anti-cancer compound IRX4647, an agonist of the retinoic acid nuclear receptor gamma, discovered in the company’s oncology drug program. The paper, titled “A novel retinoic acid receptor-gamma agonist antagonizes immune checkpoint resistance in lung cancers by altering the tumor immune microenvironment,” authored by Cheng-Hsin Wei, Ph.D., et al., reports studies done in the laboratory of the Molecular Pharmacology Program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), supervised by Xi Liu, Ph.D., Senior Principal Scientist; and Ethan Dmitrovsky, M.D., president of Leidos Biomedical Research and Director of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

The studies showed that oral treatment with IRX4647 in combination with an immune checkpoint inhibitor (anti-PD-L1) resulted in suppression of a typically checkpoint inhibitor treatment-resistant syngeneic lung cancer in mice. IRX4647 did not appreciably impact growth of the lung tumor cells in cultures, indicating that the compound alone is not directly toxic to lung cancer cells. Studies in other syngeneic mouse cancer models implicated the tumor microenvironment in these anti-cancer effects since T cell depletion antagonized those effects. Notably, treatment of mice with IRX4647 in combination with the checkpoint inhibitor increased the presence of CD-4 T-lymphocytes in the tumors, indicating that the compound’s anti-cancer effects were mediated through promotion of anti-cancer immune responses in combination with the checkpoint inhibitor.

Dr. Dmitrovsky stated, “These results reveal an approach to potentially improve treatment of cancers in humans using combinations of retinoic acid nuclear receptor gamma agonists with checkpoint inhibitors. Future clinical trials could address this possibility.”

Martin Sanders, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Io Therapeutics noted that “Scientific Reports – Nature Publishing Group” is the fifth most highly cited scientific journal in the world. “That these results were published so prominently in the literature indicates their importance to the future of cancer therapeutics.” Sagar Vuligonda, Ph.D, Chief Scientific Officer of Io Therapeutics stated “The company has designed, synthesized, and patented multiple structural families of compounds which bind selectively to the retinoic acid nuclear receptor gamma, and to various other retinoic acid nuclear receptor targets, which we are pursuing as potential treatments for diverse cancers, and also for treatment of neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and psoriasis.”

About Io Therapeutics:   Io Therapeutics, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Spring, Texas, focused on the development of novel retinoic acid-based compounds for treatment of cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, and autoimmune diseases.
