Minovia Therapeutics Reports First Clinical Data Demonstrating Disease-Modifying Efficacy and Safety of Mitochondrial Augmentation Therapy in Pediatric Patients with Primary Mitochondrial Diseases

First in human clinical study provides proof-of-concept for mitochondrial augmentation therapy platform, which enables use of healthy mitochondria to improve mitochondrial function and mitigate effects of large-scale mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletion syndromes

Study showed improved quality of life measures in children with Pearson Syndrome and Kearns-Sayre Syndrome spectrum

No treatment-related adverse effects reported in study

WOBURN, Mass. and HAIFA, Israel, Dec. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Minovia Therapeutics, a clinical-stage global biotechnology company, today announced that the findings of the first clinical use of mitochondrial augmentation therapy (MAT) platform to treat pediatric patients with primary mitochondrial diseases have been published in Science Translational Medicine. The study was conducted in collaboration with global leaders in the field of hematology and primary mitochondrial disease at Sheba Medical Center (Tel Hashomer, Israel).

Single, large deletions in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can lead to a variety of devastating diseases, including Pearson Syndrome and Kearns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS). These mtDNA deletion syndromes are sporadic, uncurable and ultimately fatal. Pearson syndrome is a bone marrow failure disease that usually begins in infancy. In addition to presenting with sideroblastic anemia, patients are characterized by exocrine pancreas dysfunction. About half of patients die in infancy or childhood, while many who survive go on to develop KSS, a progressive multisystem disorder.

“These findings demonstrate that mitochondrial augmentation therapy is feasible in children with mitochondrial DNA deletion syndromes and that autologous CD34+ cells augmented with mitochondria derived from maternal blood may potentially deliver some functional improvement for patients living with these debilitating diseases for which there are no available therapies,” said Elad Jacoby, M.D., Ph.D., Hemato-oncology Pediatric department, Sheba Medical Center.

MAT is designed to rescue mitochondrial function and metabolic activity in diseased cells through enrichment with healthy mitochondria. This builds upon Minovia’s previous demonstration that MAT provides long-term functional benefit in an immunocompromised mouse model, and that mitochondria can transfer between hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in vivo (Jacoby et al 2021). Preclinical studies showed that hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) can transfer normal mitochondria to hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells and improve disease features (Rocca et al., 2017).

Minovia is developing MAT to treat Primary Mitochondrial Diseases such as Pearson syndrome, as well as other mitochondrially-related sideroblastic anemias. The Company’s lead investigational candidate, MNV-101 (MNV-BM-BLD), has been granted the Fast-Track, Orphan Drug and Rare Pediatric Disease designations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The latest study reported results from six patients ranging from 2 to 7 years of age: four with Pearson syndrome and two with KSS spectrum. All six patients suffered from significant failure to thrive and advanced multi-organ disease, which was either immediately or potentially life-threatening, requiring multiple ongoing supportive care interventions.

Key Findings

  • No treatment-related adverse events were reported. Adverse events related to the leukapheresis procedure were managed with standard medical care. Adverse events that occurred following treatment were expected due to the patient’s underlying disease and resolved spontaneously or with appropriate treatment.
  • Higher levels of normal mitochondrial DNA were observed in the blood of four out of six patients, indicating a reduction of mitochondria with large DNA deletions.
  • Clinical improvement in aerobic function was observed in some patients, and five of six patients experienced weight gain.
  • Quality of life measurements showed improvement in most patients. Changes in the general well-being of children and physical activity were reported, along with increased time spent awake and in play.
  • A series of aerobic and endurance tests were performed on two patients. Both patients demonstrated improvement in leg muscle strength and endurance at 6 and 12 months post treatment.
  • One patient, who at baseline was unable to walk any distance, was able to walk 10 meters at 12 months and had improvement on the 30-second sit-to-stand test.
  • Another patient demonstrated improvement in muscle function in some tests and a sustained improvement in others, including the six-minute walk test and sit-to-stand capacity at 6 and 12 months.

“We are tremendously encouraged by evidence of improvement to the quality of life and well-being of the children treated with MAT, including clinical improvements in aerobic function, weight gain and increased strength and endurance,” said Natalie Yivgi Ohana, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO of Minovia. “We believe these findings lay important groundwork for further development of MAT and future clinical trials to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of MAT in patients with primary mitochondrial disorders and other diseases. Our excellent collaboration with the clinicians and teams at the Sheba Medical Center, as well as with patient advocacy groups, will enable us to accelerate the clinical development plans for Pearson Syndrome patients.”

About Primary Mitochondrial Diseases (PMD) and Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Primary Mitochondrial Diseases (PMDs) are chronic, genetic disorders that occur when mitochondria fail to produce enough energy for the body to function properly. Mitochondrial diseases affect about one in 5,000 people globally and can be sporadic or inherited and onset can occur at any age. Mitochondrial diseases can affect almost any part of the body, including the cells of the brain, nerves, muscles, kidneys, heart, liver, eyes, ears or pancreas. Mitochondrial dysfunction also plays an important role in more prevalent diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and diabetes.

About Minovia
Minovia Therapeutics is a clinical-stage global biotechnology company committed to the discovery and development of novel approaches to treating diseases caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. Minovia’s Mitochondrial Augmentation Therapy (MAT) platform is designed to extend and enhance human lives by restoring mitochondrial function using autologous stem cells enriched with healthy, functional mitochondria. This unique approach capitalizes on the natural ability of mitochondria to transfer between cells. The company’s initial clinical focus is on primary mitochondrial diseases, such as Pearson syndrome, a fatal pediatric disease, and hematological disorders that include mitochondrial dysfunction. Minovia was founded by leading researchers in mitochondrial biology and is headquartered in Haifa, Israel, with operations in Massachusetts. For more information, visit http://minoviatx.com/.

iDenfy Featured in G2’s Winter Report as the Leading Identity Verification Software

iDenfy’s full-stack ID verification solution was recognized by the review platform.

KAUNAS, Lithuania, Dec. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — iDenfy, the fraud prevention startup best known for its full-stack ID verification solution, has been recognized by G2, the global review platform. This week, G2 announced its Winter report, where iDenfy scored first place for being the leader in identity verification.

G2 scores its vendors based on community feedback and information collected from social networks or online sources. Currently, the popular platform has nearly 2 million genuine product reviews. This is the first time iDenfy was featured by G2, reaching this massive milestone within a short time.

Since joining the platform in September, iDenfy has landed the number one spot in G2’s Winter report in multiple categories, including Easiest Admin, Best Usability, and Easiest To Use. G2 measured the results based on three criteria levels: Usability, Relationship, and Implementation. That led iDenfy to win first place in other areas, such as Best Relationship, Easiest To Do Business With, and Most Implementable.

With a rating of 4.9 out of 5, the new G2 IDV industry leader has collected 50+ user reviews. iDenfy’s software suits various sectors that look for automated compliance and customer onboarding solutions, including fintech, online gaming, blockchain, and e-commerce. Despite the increasing reviews from different industry experts, the competition level aligns with the high ID verification market demand. Currently, G2 has 192 listings in the Identity Verification category available.

“Collecting partners’ feedback has become a valuable practice for further company improvement,” said iDenfy’s Co-Founder and CEO, Domantas Ciulde. “Our team is honored to read honest comments from our partners who share ideas based on actual experiences. Some of them have been using our solutions for years. We’ve utilized this platform as an alternative communication channel to discuss customization options and respond to new feature requests.”

G2 names its peer-to-peer site as the market’s most trustworthy feedback platform. To leave a review, users must verify their business email first, then describe the pros and cons of the software they use. Before the comment is live, G2 approves the review, which allows it to filter illegitimate and copied reviews.

The reviews on G2 show iDenfy’s successful long-term partnerships. “Many organizations, including the Bank of Lithuania, trust iDenfy, which is critical when evaluating the trustworthiness of a partner with whom we work,” wrote VIAINVEST’s platform lead, Aleksandrs Puzdrans, when describing iDenfy. “The important thing we learned about iDenfy is that they offer an all-in-one solution for identification and screening,” added Puzdrans.

Last month, iDenfy expanded its collection by launching an Address Verification software to reduce user friction. The new service responds to increasing Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations requiring more robust tools to ensure KYC and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) processes by verifying customers’ identity and address information.

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew highlights six sectors for diversification in 2023

Basseterre, Dec. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew, recently delivered his first Budget Address under the theme “Towards Our Transformation as a Sustainable Small Island State”.

During his speech which was delivered on December 14th, he highlighted six major sectors for diversification and growth opportunities.

The six sectors are:

  • Citizenship by Investment Programme
  • Agriculture
  • Medicinal Cannabis Industry
  • Construction
  • Tourism
  • Manufacturing

The new administration is determined to support the growth and development of the nation, said the Prime Minister. “Our government has adopted a clear agenda to transform St Kitts and Nevis into a sustainable island state. Our Sustainable Island State Agenda is founded on seven (7) key pillars which include Food for Security, Green Energy Transition, Economic Diversification, Sustainable Industries, the Creative Economy, COVID-19 recovery and Social Protection. In this context, over the next 12 months, our government will use the 2023 Estimates as a vehicle to vigorously pursue a number of policies, programmes and projects that would allow us to achieve some of the important objectives that will help us to move forward with our agenda to make St Kitts and Nevis a better place to live, work and visit.”

Citizenship by Investment Programme

Being the pioneer in the global investor immigration industry for nearly 40 years, the government of St Kitts and Nevis is enhancing and strengthening its Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme.

“We are seeking to ensure that our CBI Programme is mutually beneficial for all stakeholders, the people of St Kitts and Nevis, investors, developers, local service providers, and international marketing agents, added the Prime Minister.

From the revenues forecasted for the CBI Programme over the next few months, the government aims to create a Sovereign Wealth Fund that will be used to safely invest in international markets and industries over the long term. Through legislative measures, the fund will only be accessed for emergencies such as natural disaster responses and not for addressing recurrent expenses. Funds from the CBI Programme will also be used to diversify the local economy, specifically through entrepreneurship programmes, sustainable work opportunities and homeownership.

“Our prudent government will use CBI revenues to improve our healthcare, social services, energy infrastructure and water security. In 2023 and beyond, our CBI Programme’s profits will work for all Kittitians and Nevisians,” announced the Prime Minister.

“Our citizenship is precious, therefore the evolved CBI Programme will invite bold and creative top-notch investors to our shores who will develop innovative industries in St Kitts and Nevis, the construction of real estate developments pursuant to our government’s priority infrastructure list, and in all things, bring substantial benefit to the people of St Christopher and Nevis.”

Agriculture

Food security is considered a high priority in the government’s Sustainable Island State agenda and has significant links to the expansion of its manufacturing sector and the creation of sustainable livelihoods.

“Our government is committed to modernizing the agriculture sector and bringing it into the 21st century. This is a critical part of our thrust for reimagining our development to build a sustainable island state,” continued the Prime Minister.

Over the last four months, the new administration has focused on activities geared towards deepening climate-smart agricultural practices and promoting sustainable agriculture. Over the next five years, the administration hopes to achieve its goal of significantly increasing the production and manufacturing of agricultural products by introducing and scaling up the use of technology and innovative techniques. Initiatives include the increase of production and export of marine products, the improvement of agricultural product standards and international marketability, and the allocation of EC$17.0 million to facilitate Recurrent Expenditure to promote capacity-building in the agricultural sector. This allocation represents a 20.4 percent increase when compared to the 2022 estimates.

Medicinal Cannabis

A revamped Medicinal Cannabis Authority has been established to regulate the Medicinal Cannabis Industry in St Kitts and Nevis. The aim of the authority will be to provide a medical, therapeutic and scientific cannabis industry that creates equal opportunities, enables people’s health and wellness with safe and diverse products, fosters investor confidence and strengthens the St Kitts and Nevis economy through an effective regulatory framework.

“Our St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration has chosen to take a more responsible and citizen-friendly approach of first researching and then selecting a unique set of policies to govern this new industry. Understanding the policy ecosystem is critical to how we will control and conduct operations in this new niche including, but not limited to, the application of licenses, social equity models, and more. Beyond policy, it is also critical to engage with the people and assess the gap between public expectations and industry deliverables,” said Minister Drew.

Construction

Following an estimated decline in the construction sector of 1.5 percent with over 20 percent in job losses recorded in July 2022 when compared to the same period in 2021, the new administration is prioritising plans to foster employment gains and increase growth in the sector. The expansion of infrastructure development is an important part of this plan and in the coming year, the government will initiate the construction of the Renaissance Housing Programme.

Under the Renaissance Housing Programme the government aims to construct 2,000 energy efficient homes over the next five years. The National Housing Corporation (NHC) will commence the first phase of building in the first quarter of 2023 with the construction of 100 homes.

Over the coming year the NHC will also restart the West Street Housing Project to provide much-needed housing for 15 families. The building of homes for 2,500 landowners will also be facilitated through the building assistance program of the NHC, in partnership with the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank.

“We are well aware that roads are the arteries through which economic development, growth and social function are dispensed. As such, this Government with the assistance of the Public Works and Lands and Survey Departments will, in the coming year, commence the design and construction of roads in residential developments that have yet to benefit from adequate road infrastructure, such as those developments under the Special Land Distribution Initiative,” said the Prime Minister.

Tourism

Following the decline of the tourism industry by 63.1 percent and 17.6 percent in 2020 and 2021, respectively, the new administration saw a need to refresh the country’s product and service offerings. The St Kitts Tourism Authority embarked on a campaign to generate demand and highlight the unique qualities of the destination. The new brand campaign, “Venture Deeper”, debuted in September this year.

“The campaign builds on our island’s distinctive characteristics while introducing elements of introspective self-discovery that reflect the purpose-driven goals of today’s travellers. Venture Deeper is designed to evoke, within the traveller, a desire to ‘peel back’ our layers and discover the true essence of the destination. We believe that, in doing so, more of our stakeholders can have interactions with our visitors leading to greater economic impact. Our focus must now shift from a tunnel vision of solely looking at arrival numbers to also looking at how we can increase our visitor spend. Our objective must be to offer competitive products and services and to do so in a manner that maintains the highest standards and puts the greatest amount of money in the pockets of our people. We have put our people back to work and are focusing attention on the areas that will expand opportunities for sustained employment in the years to come,” noted Prime Minister Drew.

The government will also focus on improving air travel routes, infrastructure and pricing. Plans to upgrade the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport are in place. The 2023 government estimates that the proposed budget to support the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and International Transport is EC$27.0 million for Recurrent Expenditure. The Prime Minister added, “These resources would be used to further enhance and diversify tourism products particularly as it relates to the development of increased facilitation of community destination tourism. In support of the product development and airlift efforts, a Capital Budget totalling EC$17.6 million is proposed of which EC$8.0 million has been allocated to enable us to attract new airlift into the Federation.”

Manufacturing

According to the new administration, manufacturing is regarded as a vehicle for transforming the local economy, creating sustainable jobs and serves as a credible source for earning critical foreign exchange. To revive the sector, the new administration has recently endorsed the updated version of the National Manufacturing Strategy 2022-2027. The strategy has renewed focus on improving the business environment and increasing the competitiveness of manufacturing operations in the Federation. The government aims to establish at least one additional manufacturing business in the federation and is targeting at least one factory to build solar panels that could provide easy access to low-cost energy saving options for residents. There are also ongoing efforts to strengthen the national Bureau of Standards to provide additional support to the manufacturing sector. “The proposed 2023 Estimates will ensure that upgrades to the Bureau of Standards continue to strengthen the quality assurance mechanisms needed for our farmers and other producers to export products regionally and internationally,” said the Prime Minister.

Hitachi Energy and Linxon support National Grid in achieving sustainability targets through pioneering 420 kV SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear technology

Strengthening key power infrastructure in London while reducing carbon footprint

Zurich, Switzerland, Dec. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy and Linxon are collaborating to strengthen London Power Tunnels (LPT), a key power infrastructure project that will ensure reliable, clean electricity supply for England’s capital city. To support National Grid in accelerating its net zero targets, Hitachi Energy will deliver EconiQ™ 420-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas-insulated lines (GIL) containing no sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

As one of the world’s largest investor-owned transmission and distribution utilities, National Grid has the ambition to remove all SF6 from its fleet by 2050. In 2020, it embarked on LPT project that will replace ageing high-voltage electricity cables and expand network capacity to meet the increasing electricity demand. Considered to be one of the city’s largest engineering projects since the 1960s, the LPT will span 32.5 kilometers via underground tunnels in South London.

Linxon is building Bengeworth Road substation for National Grid to develop the LPT infrastructure. To support National Grid in its transition to SF6-free solutions, Hitachi Energy will deliver 7 bays of its EconiQ 420 kV GIS to enable the transmission of electricity over long distances while eliminating SF6, in addition to EconiQ 420 kV GIL. The EconiQ high-voltage portfolio is 100 percent as reliable as the conventional solutions based on SF6. The installation is expected to commence by 2023.

“We’re delighted that Bengeworth Road substation, at the heart of London Power Tunnels, will be SF6-free,” said Onur Aydemir, National Grid Project Director for London Power Tunnels. “This key power project will deliver a secure energy supply to the capital, and by using sustainable technology we are minimizing the environmental impact of our operations to support the transition to Net Zero.”

“Following the successful collaboration with National Grid on the world’s first replacement of SF6 in existing high-voltage equipment and award-winning project in Richborough, UK, we are proud to be supporting National Grid again in its transition to SF6-free solutions,” said Markus Heimbach, Managing Director of the High Voltage Products business at Hitachi Energy. “The EconiQ GIS is based on our breakthrough SF6-free 420 kV circuit-breaker that demonstrates the reliability and scalability of the technology for the lowest carbon footprint.”

“Linxon is building the infrastructure to power the world with carbon free energy. Thanks to strong collaboration with Hitachi Energy, Linxon is able to provide the pioneering EconiQ SF6-free solution from Hitachi Energy for the Bengeworth substation, supporting our client to meet their sustainability targets”, said Stefan Reisacher, CEO of Linxon.

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) flew the new NATO Pod for the first time on Nov. 23, 2022. The NATO Pod is a joint development between GA-ASI and Sener Aeroespacial of Spain. The NATO Pod is built by Sener Aeroespacial in Europe to meet NATO airworthiness standards, while increasing configuration and payload options for MQ-9A and MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft produced by GA-ASI. The new product is designed for international customers that are interested in rapidly integrating sovereign payload capabilities to achieve specific mission objectives.

The test flight was performed at the Yuma Proving Grounds using a GA-ASI owned MQ-9A aircraft.

NATO Pod development was driven by GA-ASI’s desire to provide customers with a customizable, multi-use pod for carriage of sovereign, cross-domain Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensors for MQ-9A and MQ-9B RPA systems. GA-ASI is working with Sener and other European suppliers to integrate their sensor capabilities within this new pod. The NATO Pod is a flexible, scalable, certifiable enclosure with the structural features to host wide-ranging mission systems. The pod meets DEF STAN and STANAG certification standards for airworthiness, including lightning protection and bird impact.

The NATO Pod interfaces with common MQ-9 aircraft power and navigation interfaces, including the platform datalink connection to the Ground Control Station (GCS). Customer system integration is based on using a common set of interfaces to the aircraft and GCS systems.

“This is a truly momentous product design and implementation effort,” said GA-ASI Vice President of Mission Payloads and Exploitation, Satish Krishnan. “We’ve worked closely with Sener to meet requirements and keep our combined teams in sync to achieve this great outcome. Our successful test flight allows us to begin marketing this new capability to our international partner nations as a way to rapidly add sovereign payload capability.”

Rafael Orbe, Defence General Director at Sener Aeroespacial, said: “This first flight is the fruit of a long collaboration between GA-ASI and Sener and we are proud to have contributed to the success of the project. We look forward to continuing the good work together, which we are sure will bring us more successes in the future.”

This industrial cooperation effort introduces European manufacturing of GA-ASI designed mission hardware and opens the door to customer-specified mission payloads – including technologies that are built outside the U.S. – for deployment on MQ-9A and MQ-9B. The NATO Pod that was tested featured a payload built by Arpège S.A.S. France.

MQ-9As are operated by a number of European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. GA-ASI’s newer MQ-9B variant has been acquired by the UK and Belgium. Recently Poland announced that it will lease MQ-9A.
