Christmas Day fire burns Ju Percussion warehouse, injures firefighter

The Ju Percussion Group’s warehouse in Bali District in New Taipei was hit by a fire on Sunday night, causing damage to stage props for the musical troupe’s production “MuLan” and injuring one firefighter.

The fire broke out at around 7 p.m. in the sheet metal complex in Bali’s Xiaguzi area where Ju Percussion’s warehouse is located and spread to several adjoining workshops, including the warehouse, according to the New Taipei Fire Department.

Some 151 personnel and 56 vehicles were dispatched to the scene, where the fire was put out at 9:42 p.m., department officials said.

One firefighter suffered hand burns while operating a machine trying to extinguish the blaze and the individual was being treated at a nearby hospital, the officials said.

According to the fire department, the fire ripped through more than 2,000 square meters of the facility before it was put out, with the cause of the blaze still under investigation.

Asked about the accident, Ju Percussion Group CEO Chen Ssu-lun (???) confirmed to CNA on Monday morning that nobody from the troupe was injured in the blaze.

Some of the troupe’s stage props for its percussion production “MuLan” were damaged, however, according to Chen, who said the items that were destroyed had to be recreated immediately because the play will be staged from Feb. 9-26.

The musical drama, mixed with Peking opera, was produced based on a well-known Chinese story about a daughter who does military service on behalf of her father, according to Ju Percussion.

New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (???) said the city government will offer any assistance it can to help Ju Percussion recover from the fire and keep its roots in the city.
