CORONAVIRUS/Kaohsiung delays start of elementary school spring semester

Elementary schools in Kaohsiung will delay the start of the new semester by three days, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (???) announced Thursday.

Chen made the announcement during a press conference, where he said the decision to delay the start of the new elementary school semester was made to safeguard the well-being of younger children during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, community infections are still sporadic within the city, he said

A three-day delay will give the city government enough time to assess the situation and determine a more informed approach, the mayor added.

He went on to announce that while elementary schools will now open on Monday, Feb. 14, junior and senior high schools will start the new semester on Friday, Feb. 11, as scheduled.

For parents of elementary school students whose schedules are based on the new semester starting on Friday, Chen added that schools will still provide a basic daycare service.
