Taiwan on Thursday received a new shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT) COVID-19 vaccine, comprising 827,000 doses, from the manufacturer in Germany.
The Pfizer-BNT vaccine shipment arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 5:42 a.m. on a China Airlines charter flight that left Frankfurt on Wednesday.
The vaccines were transported to a designated cold chain warehouse at Taoyuan airport and sealed for inspection by Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration, before they could be distributed for use, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The BNT doses will be administered, alongside Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines, during the 12th round of COVID-19 vaccination scheduled for Oct. 22-Nov. 3.
The new shipment was part of a total order for 15 million doses of the Pfizer-BNT vaccine, placed by three private entities — Hon Hai Precision Co.’s YongLin Charity, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation — that are donating the vaccines to the government for distribution.
So far, 5.925 million doses have been delivered, including the 827,000 on Thursday, according to the CECC.
