CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 14,084 new COVID-19 cases, 38 deaths

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 14,084 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, all but 50 of which were domestic cases, and 38 deaths from the disease.

The cases reported Sunday represented an 8.1-percent week-over-week increase, according to CECC data.

The deceased reported on Sunday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health conditions, while 22 of them had not gotten any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC reported 89 cases classified as moderate and 29 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 2,407, followed by Taichung with 1,916 and Kaohsiung with 1,750.

Taoyuan recorded 1,647 new cases, Taipei 1,384, Tainan 1,080, Changhua 713, Hsinchu City 441, Hsinchu County 431, Pingtung 366, Miaoli 328, and Yunlin 312.

Chiayi County had 216 cases, Yilan 213, Nantou 213, Hualien 154, Keelung 152, Chiayi City 142, Taitung 78, Kinmen 56, Penghu 33, and the Matsu Islands two.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,470,187 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,270 classified as imported.

With the 38 deaths reported on Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,679.
