CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 15,877 new COVID-19 cases, 68 deaths

Taiwan reported 15,877 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and 68 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The CECC said the deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but four of them had underlying health conditions, while 35 were unvaccinated against COVID-19.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 126 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 49 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 2,973, followed by Taoyuan with 2,031 and Kaohsiung with 1,851.

Taichung reported 1,805 cases, Tainan 1,397, Taipei 1,362, Changhua 697, Hsinchu County 500, Pingtung 401, Yunlin 383, Hsinchu City 370, Miaoli 325, and Keelung 302.

Yilan had 301 cases, Nantou 246, Hualien 245, Chiayi County 220, Chiayi City 149, Taitung 111, Kinmen 44, Penghu 28 and the Matsu Islands six.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,925,158 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 53,554 classified as imported.

With the 68 deaths reported Sunday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,520.
