CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 16,561 new COVID-19 cases, 34 deaths

Taiwan on Monday reported 16,561 new COVID-19 infections, all but 23 of which were locally transmitted, and 34 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

 

The new cases represented the lowest daily figure since Aug. 15 and a 26.8 percent drop from a week earlier, the CECC said.

 

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s, and all but one of them had underlying health issues, while 16 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

 

Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 36 new cases classified as severe and 85 as moderate.

 

Of the 7,836,222 confirmed COVID-19 infections this year, 14,581 have been classified as severe and 19,904 as moderate, accounting for 0.19 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data.

 

Regional breakdown

On Monday, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases, with 2,720, followed by Taichung with 2,375 and Kaohsiung with 2,229.

 

Taoyuan reported 1,760 cases, Tainan 1,515, Taipei 1,339, Changhua 843, Pingtung 536, Hsinchu County 437, Miaoli 375, Nantou 369 and Yunlin 367.

 

Chaiyi County had 329 cases, Hsinchu City 323, Keelung 214, Yilan 212, Chiayi City 212, Hualien 172, Taitung 83, Penghu 64, Kinmen 59 and the Matsu Islands 5, the CECC said.

 

To date, Taiwan has recorded 7,904,094 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 36,682 classified as imported.

 

With the 34 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,232.
