Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 16,619 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, all but 41 of which were locally transmitted, and 40 deaths from the disease.
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but one had underlying health issues, while 23 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
The 16,578 new domestic cases represented a week-over-week increase of 0.2 percent, the CECC said.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 2,640, followed by Taichung with 2,324 and Kaohsiung with 2,225.
Taoyuan reported 1,811 new cases, Tainan 1,646, Taipei 1,315, Changhua County 901, Pingtung County 514, Yunlin County 442, Hsinchu City 426, Hsinchu County 417 and Miaoli County 394.
Nantou County had 299 cases, Chiayi County 258, Yilan 232, Hualien 188, Keelung 187, Chiayi City 179, Taitung County 83, Kinmen County 50, Penghu County 42 and the Matsu Islands five, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,050,901 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 36,977 classified as imported.
With the 40 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,602.
