Taiwan reported 17,199 new cases of COVID-19 and 57 deaths from the disease on Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The CECC said that 16,902 of the new cases were domestic infections, and the number represents a 25.2 percent decline from that on the same day of the previous week.
The deceased ranged in age from their 20s to their 90s, the CECC said, adding that all but three had underlying health conditions, while 26 were unvaccinated against COVID-19.
Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 141 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 45 as severe.
There were 138,344 reported infections over the past week (Feb. 5-11), representing a 24.7-percent drop from the 183,785 cases the preceding week, the CECC said.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases with 3,179, followed by Taichung with 1,996 and Kaohsiung with 1,982.
Taoyuan reported 1,859 cases, Tainan 1,516, Taipei 1,513, Changhua 796, Hsinchu County 513, Pingtung 455, Yilan 438, Yunlin 427, Hsinchu City 425, Miaoli 359, Keelung 356, and Chiayi County 267.
Nantou had 236 cases, Hualien 218, Chiayi City 153, Taitung 102, Kinmen 61, Penghu 45, and the Matsu Islands six.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,809,098 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 51,938 classified as imported.
With the 57 deaths reported on Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,103.
