CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 19,891 new COVID-19 cases, 41 deaths

Taiwan on Thursday reported 19,891 new COVID-19 infections and 41 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 23.6-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased reported Thursday included a 13-year-old girl who suffered from a chronic neurological disease, while the others ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s.

All but two had underlying conditions, while 16 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 72 new cases classified as moderate and 39 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,953, followed by Taichung with 2,585 and Taoyuan with 2,181.

Kaohsiung reported 2,116 new cases, Taipei 2,088, Tainan 1,602, Changhua 953, Hsinchu County 710, Hsinchu City 630, Miaoli 470, Pingtung 399 and Yunlin 374.

Chiayi County had 287 cases, Nantou 286, Yilan 273, Keelung 239, Chiayi City 186, Hualien 183, Kinmen 113, Taitung 106, Penghu 59 and the Matsu Islands five, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,644,555 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 39,143 classified as imported.

With the 41 deaths reported on Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,999.
