CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 45,110 new COVID-19 cases, 109 deaths

Taiwan on Monday reported 45,110 new COVID-19 cases and 109 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals who passed away ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s, and included 105 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 44 who were unvaccinated, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC said that 146 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections, while 232 other infected individuals were now displaying moderate symptoms of the disease.

Of the 2,864,170 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 4,011 have been classified as severe infections, and 6,431 as moderate, accounting for 0.14 percent and 0.22 percent of the total, according to CECC data as of June 12.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.

Kaohsiung reported the highest number of domestic cases on Monday, with 7,184, followed by Taichung with 6,694 and New Taipei with 5,470.

Taoyuan recorded 3,971 cases, Tainan 3,969, Changhua County 3,545, Taipei 3,099, Pingtung County 1,924, Hsinchu County 1,160, Miaoli County 1,140, Yunlin County 1,034, Nantou County 1,021, Chiayi County 849, Hsinchu City 792, and Yilan County 723.

Hualien County reported 674 cases, Keelung 535, Chiayi City 518, Taitung County 471, Penghu County 199, Kinmen County 97, while the Matsu Islands reported 12, the CECC said.

Another 29 cases reported Monday involved people who caught COVID-19 overseas before entering Taiwan.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 2,937,363 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 2,923,844 that were classified as domestic infections.

With the 109 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 4,280.
