CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 50,657 new COVID-19 cases, 163 deaths

Taiwan reported 50,657 new COVID-19 cases and 163 deaths from the disease on Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The lower number of cases on Sunday compared to the 79,663 reported on Saturday was partially due to the CECC’s reporting system malfunctioning on Saturday.

Typically, the cases reported on any given day are those that are entered into the system a day earlier, but Saturday’s case numbers included those entered Friday up to noon Saturday.

Because of that, some cases that should have been included in Sunday’s case count were instead included in Saturday’s.

The patients who passed away ranged in age from their 30s to 90s, including 151 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 74 who had been unvaccinated, the CECC said.

The CECC also said that 147 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections, while 279 other patients had developed moderate symptoms of the disease.

Of the 2,813,617 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 3,865 have been classified as severe infections and 6,199 as moderate, accounting for 0.14 percent and 0.22 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 11.

In all other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.

Taichung reported the highest number of domestic cases on Sunday, with 7,734, followed by Kaohsiung with 7,250 and New Taipei with 5,772.

Tainan recorded 4,846 cases, Taoyuan 4,454, Changhua County 4,384, Taipei 3,331, Pingtung County 2,190, Nantou County 1,300, Hsinchu County 1,211, Miaoli County 1,136, Yunlin County 1,124, Chiayi County 1,061, and Hsinchu City 1,016.

Yilan County reported 940 cases, Hualien County 664, Keelung 663, Chiayi City 647, Taitung County 579, Penghu County 195, Kinmen County 117, and Matsu Islands 29.

Another 14 cases reported Sunday involved people who caught COVID-19 overseas before entering Taiwan.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 2,892,263 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, of which 2,878,773 were domestic infections and the remainder originated abroad.

With the 163 deaths reported Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 4,171, CECC data showed.
