CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 66,189 new COVID-19 cases; total passes 3 million

Taiwan on Tuesday reported 66,189 new COVID-19 infections, taking the total number past 3 million, and as well as 123 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals who passed away ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s, and included 119 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases and 48 who had not received a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC said that 138 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections — meaning that they were being treated in hospital intensive care units — while 147 others were now displaying moderate symptoms of the disease.

Of the 2,909,241 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 4,149 have been classified as severe infections, and 6,578 as moderate, accounting for 0.14 percent and 0.23 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 13.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

In terms of the regional breakdown, Taichung reported the highest number of domestic cases Tuesday, with 10,210, followed by Kaohsiung with 9,625, and New Taipei with 7,857.

Tainan reported 6,288 cases, Changhua 5,239, Taoyuan 4,898, Taipei 4,195, Pingtung 3,249, Yunlin 1,861, Miaoli 1,681, Nantou 1,650, Hsinchu County 1,609, Chiayi County 1,418, Yilan 1,295, and Hsinchu City 1,155.

Hualien recorded 962 cases, Chiayi City 912, Keelung 832, Taitung 787, Penghu 250, Kinmen 126, and the Matsu Islands 20, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, 70 of the new cases Tuesday were people who had contracted COVID-19 overseas before entering Taiwan, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 3,003,501 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 2,989,912 that were classified as domestic infections. The country passed the 2 million mark on May 31 and exceeded 1 million on May 19, CECC data shows.

With the 123 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 4,388.
