Taiwan on Wednesday reported 34,623 new cases of COVID-19 and 21 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and six were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 33 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 99 newly classified as moderate.
Of the 5,231,184 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,529 have been classified as severe infections and 13,365 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 30.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases Wednesday, with 7,607, followed by Taipei with 4,332 and Taichung with 4,100.
Taoyuan had 3,780 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,592, Tainan 2,173, Changhua 1,416, Hsinchu City 1,047, Hsinchu County 1,044, Miaoli 899, Pingtung 801, Yunlin 708 and Keelung 702.
Hualien had 652 cases, Yilan 614, Nantou 474, Chiayi County 446, Taitung 331, Chiayi City 327, Penghu 184, Kinmen 133 and the Matsu Islands 27, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,308,029 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,280,142 domestic cases.
With the 21 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the county rose to 9,914.
