CORONAVIRUS/Taoyuan, Hsinchu schools close earlier for winter break due to COVID-19

Several schools in Taoyuan, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County announced earlier closures for winter break on Tuesday due to several students contracting COVID-19.

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (???) said at a press briefing that Xinyi Elementary School and Washington Kindergarten, both in Zhongli District, had suspended classes for 14 days starting Tuesday until Jan. 31 after two students attending the schools tested positive for the virus on Monday, while undergoing quarantine.

COVID-19 testing will be arranged for other students at the two schools, Cheng said.

To date, 14 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported among students in Taoyuan, according to Cheng.

All local elementary schools will suspend classes earlier for winter break, while junior and senior high schools will start winter break after students complete their final examinations by Jan. 20, Cheng said.

He also announced the closures of Longtan Elementary School and Longtan Kindergarten for one day on Tuesday as a precaution because some students had come in contact with confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, San Min Primary School in Hsinchu City and Yi Ming Senior High School in Hsinchu County have also suspended classes and announced earlier closures for the holiday break after two new COVID-19 cases who are students at the two schools were reported earlier Tuesday.

The Hsinchu City government said in a statement Tuesday that four new COVID-19 cases, who are members of the same family, were reported earlier that day in the city, including a student at San Min Primary School.

Another member of that family is a student at Yi Ming Senior High School in Hsinchu County, according to the Hsinchu County government.
