Taiwan on Thursday reported eight new cases of COVID-19 — two transmitted domestically and six contracted overseas — according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The two domestic cases are both contacts of previously confirmed COVID-19 patients, and tested positive in quarantine, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) said at a press briefing.
One of the patients lives in Taipei and the other in New Taipei, Chen said.
Meanwhile, the six imported cases involve four Taiwanese nationals, one Japanese and an American who traveled to Taiwan from the United States, Japan and China, according to the CECC.
In addition, two deaths were reported Thursday, men in their 70s and 80s who passed away on Aug. 20, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 15,947 COVID-19 cases, 14,345 of which are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the country has risen to 832, with all but 12 recorded since May 15, CECC data showed.
Around 41 percent of Taiwan’s 23.5 million population has received one COVID-19 vaccine shot and 3.4 percent have had the two doses needed to be fully vaccinated.
