COST OF LIVING/KFC to raise prices in Taiwan from Thursday

American fast food chain KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) will raise the prices of some of its items in Taiwan to reflect growing costs, company management said Wednesday.

The price hike, which will take effect on Thursday, will see prices raised by 6.2 percent on average, KFC said in a press release.

According to KFC, the price of egg tarts will increase by NT$6 (US$0.20), NT$6 for each piece of fried chicken, and NT$4-7 for orders of French fries.

The price of the Zinger spicy chicken sandwich will also rise by NT$6 and the Peanut Lava Zinger by NT$11, KFC said.

In terms of beverages, the price of a small hot Americano will rise by NT$1 and the prices of milk tea, Coca-Cola, and lemon iced tea will increase by NT$3-5, according to the company.

KFC said the price hike was decided on after an internal review, and was primarily based on rising operating costs and issues affecting the global chicken supply chain.

Several other brands in Taiwan, including McDonald’s, Din Tai Fung, and Dain-Dain Hamburger — a local chain based in southern Taiwan — have also announced plans to raise prices in recent weeks.
