COST OF LIVING/Taiwan not included in Netflix’s new price drop

Popular online video streaming service Netflix on Friday confirmed Taiwan has not been included in the company’s latest price reduction for Asian markets.

Speaking with CNA, a Netflix rep said that Taiwan would not be joining Asian countries Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam in having subscription fees shaved.

Netflix added that it would continue to improve upon its user experience such as updating the subscription fees in countries that carry the service.

Netflix did not elaborate on which countries received how much in price cuts.

The streaming service’s recent price adjustments were first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Feb. 23, which stated that Netflix has reduced its members’ fees in more than 30 countries over the last few weeks in a bid to attract more subscribers.

The Journal listed countries such as Yemen, Jordan, Libya, Iran, Kenya, Croatia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Guatemala and Ecuador as nations that received decrease to subscription fees, with some receiving up to a 50 percent shave.

The Journal also reported that Netflix’s executives were in talks to raise the price of the streaming service in January, making the reduction coming as a surprise.

The Journal said the price cuts were likely a marketing strategy to attract new subscribers in a time where streaming services are on the rise to become the dominant form of entertainment in the modern world.
