Counterfeit NT$100 bills found circulating in Yulin County

Police said Friday they had received information on counterfeit NT$100 (US$3.3) banknotes in Yunlin County and were working to trace the source of the fake bills.

Police said they had received word that businesses in a traditional market in Beigang Township had been given fake NT$100 bills all bearing the serial number CQ281880VJ, and had formed a task force to investigate the incident.

According to police, a market vendor who received two of the fake notes at once said they had an “unusual texture” and identical serial numbers.

In addition, a resident said in a social media post that they also received fake banknotes while buying seafood in the market.

The discovery came after reports on Wednesday of recent seizures of bogus NT$1,000 banknotes in the county all bearing the serial number HR484268XD.

The Yunlin District Prosecutors’ Office said Wednesday that it had brought in nine suspects linked to the fake NT$1,000 banknotes for questioning after receiving a tip-off from local market vendors,

After obtaining court approval, they detained two men surnamed Chang (?) and Huang (?) suspected of using or counterfeiting such notes, prosecutors said.
