ELECTIONS 2022/Mayoral and magistrate candidates draw ballot numbers

Candidates in Taiwan’s local elections to be held Nov. 26 drew lots on Friday to determine their place on the ballot. Many uttered slogans homophonous with their numbers in Mandarin immediately after drawing their numbers in the hope of making an impression on voters.

The Taipei mayoral election, with 12 candidates, has the most candidates of any of Taiwan’s 22 administrative regions, followed by Hsinchu City, Chiayi City, Yilan County and Kinmen County, which all have six contenders.

Taiwan’s local government elections, which take place every four years, will be held along with a referendum on a proposed constitutional amendment to lower the voting age in Taiwan from 20 to 18.

The proposed constituional amendment received near unanimous support with a vote of 109-0 in the 113-seat Legislative Yuan on March 25.
