LGBTQ RIGHTS/Traffic controls to be in place on Nov. 19 for Kaohsiung Pride parade

Traffic control measures will be in place in parts of Kaohsiung on Nov. 19 for the 13th edition of the city’s LGBTQ+ pride parade, local police announced Wednesday.

The traffic control measures will be in place from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Yancheng, Cianjin and Lingya districts on the day of the parade, which starts on Dayong Road between the Yanchengpu metro station and the Pier-2 Art Center by the Port of Kaohsiung, local police said in a statement.

According to police, the planned parade route will pass through Gongyuan 2nd Road, Kaohsiung Bridge over the Love River, Wufu 3rd Road, Chenggong 1st Road, JhongJheng 4th Road, Dagong Road, Cisian 3rd Road, and Gongyuan 2nd Road, before returning to the starting point on Dayong Road.

According to organizers, this year’s Kaohsiung Pride parade will be themed “love beyond the physical” to highlight the need to empathize with all people, regardless of gender identity.

Kaohsiung Pride, first held in 2010, became widely known after a successful bid in 2021 to host WorldPride 2025, a biennial LGBTQ+ event licensed by the InterPride organization.

However, Kaohsiung Pride organizers announced on Aug. 12 a decision to terminate the preparations for the 2025 event because they could not “reach a consensus with InterPride” over several issues, including a demand that the event not be called “World Pride Taiwan.”
