Magnitude 4.6 earthquake jolts southeastern Taiwan

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan at 3:42 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the temblor was located about 16.2 kilometers northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 5 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County’s Donghe, Chenggong and Taitung City, where it measured 4 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in the county’s Chishang and Ludao and an intensity of 2 in the county’s Luye and Beinan and Hualien County’s Fuli, the bureau said.
