Magnitude 5.1 earthquake shakes northeastern Taiwan

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit northeastern Taiwan at 9:49 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the temblor was located at sea about 22.4 kilometers east-southeast of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 68.6 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in several areas in Yilan and neighboring New Taipei City, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, the CWB said.

The areas included Toucheng, Nan’ao and Dongshan townships, Yilan City, as well as Tamsui, Wugu and Shuangxi districts.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City, Taichung, Nantou County and Hualien County, the CWB added.
