Migrant worker allegedly kills girlfriend after failed marriage proposal

A migrant worker from the Philippines was arrested in Zhubei early Sunday on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend after she rejected his marriage proposal, according to the Hsinchu County Police Bureau.

The man, who was identified only by the name Dioni, had previously dated the victim in the Philippines, though they broke up before coming separately to Taiwan to work, the police bureau said, citing a preliminary investigation.

After meeting by chance in Taiwan, the pair resumed their relationship, though the victim reportedly refused marriage proposals from Dioni on multiple occasions, according to the police bureau.

On Saturday night, the two booked a hotel room in Zhubei, where the topic of marriage came up again. When the victim repeated her refusal to marry Dioni, a dispute broke out and in a fit of anger he strangled her, the police said.

Dioni later called the emergency services himself, but when paramedics arrived at the scene at 6 a.m., they found the victim had been dead for some time, and reported the incident to the police.

According to the police bureau, the suspect is currently being detained on suspicion of murder while an investigation into the case continues.
