Wet snow fell on Taiwan’s highest peak early Tuesday as a cold air front passed through Taiwan, bringing rain and sending temperatures down across the island, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
Wet snow began to fall on 3,952-meter Jade Mountain at 5:10 a.m. and continued until 6:30 a.m as temperatures dropped to 0.1 degrees Celsius, leaving about 1 centimeter of snow on the ground, the CWB said.
Elsewhere in Taiwan, the northeastern part of the island should see heavy rain while brief and isolated rainfall can be expected in the north and east Tuesday, the CWB said.
Central and southern Taiwan can expect cloudy skies with sudden rain showers, it said.
The lows in most parts of the island will hover around 14-16 degrees, while daytime highs could reach 17-20 degrees in the north and northeast, 21-24 degrees in central and southeastern Taiwan, and 26 degrees in the south, the bureau forecast.
Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said the chances of rain were high across Taiwan on Tuesday because of the northeasterly winds passing through.
The weather will warm up over the weekend, he said, but another wave of cold air could reach Taiwan on Sunday, bringing more rain to some areas in northern and eastern Taiwan, Wu forecast.
