New Taipei records 9°C, cold surge advisory in place through Monday

New Taipei recorded a low of 9 degrees Celsius in the early hours on Sunday, while temperatures in northern Taiwan are still likely to fall below 10 degrees before a cold air mass weakens on Monday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The overnight low in Taiwan was recorded at 2:30 a.m. at Fuguijiao in New Taipei’s coastal Shimen District, while Yangmei and Daxi districts in Taoyuan both recorded temperatures of 9.8 degrees before sunrise at 6:22 a.m., the bureau’s weather data showed.

The temperature at Fuguijiao hovered below 10 degrees before rising to 10.3 degrees at 1 p.m., according to the data.

The cold surge advisories issued by the bureau on Sunday afternoon stated that temperatures in New Taipei and Yilan County could still remain around or fall below 10 degrees before Monday daytime.

The temperatures in Taoyuan, and Hsinchu, Miaoli, and Kinmen counties could also drop below 10 degrees during the same period of time, according to the cold weather advisories.

Cloudy weather with sporadic rain is forecast for areas north of Taoyuan and eastern Taiwan on Sunday, while partly cloudy to sunny weather is expected in other parts of Taiwan and the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, the bureau said.

The continental cold air mass affecting Taiwan will weaken on Monday, with most parts of Taiwan set to see partly cloudy to sunny weather, but sporadic rain is likely in mountainous areas in Greater Taipei Area and eastern Taiwan, according to the bureau.

Daytime temperatures on Monday are forecast to hit between 17 and 20 degrees in areas north of Miaoli County, along with Yilan and Hualien counties, and between 21 and 24 degrees in other parts of Taiwan, the bureau said.

Sunny weather is expected across Taiwan on Tuesday, and daytime temperatures could rise to between 20 and 26 degrees, the bureau said.
