Northeasterly winds bring temperatures down around Taiwan

Northeasterly winds brought rain and lower temperatures to northern and eastern Taiwan on Sunday morning, but the weather is expected to warm up as the seasonal winds weaken on Monday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Daytime highs in northern and eastern Taiwan on Sunday will be 10 degrees Celsius lower than on Saturday, falling to 20-25 degrees, the CWB forecast.

The CWB also warned of brief showers in the two regions and issued heavy rain advisories for Keelung, Taipei, and New Taipei cities and Yilan County, which signal potential accumulated rainfall of over 80 millimeters within a 24-hour period, or more than 40 millimeters in an hour.

Most weather stations in areas north of Tainan recorded their lowest temperatures on Sunday since autumn began, CWB forecaster Hsu Chung-yi (???) said.

Among the lows recorded were 18.7 degrees in Yangmei District in Taoyuan, 19.6 degrees in Su’ao Township in Yilan County, and 22.1 degrees in Zhongzheng District in Taipei, Hsu said.

Central and southern Taiwan, meanwhile, will be less affected by the seasonal winds, with temperatures hitting highs of 27 to 30 degrees on Sunday. But those areas will still see temperatures fall as low as 22-24 degrees in the evening and early morning, the CWB said.

Those parts of Taiwan can expect mostly cloudy weather, with brief thundershowers near mountainous regions in the afternoon, the CWB said.

The northeasterly winds will begin to weaken on Monday morning, sending temperatures back up. There will still be rain in eastern Taiwan and in coastal areas near Keelung, but most parts of the island will experience cloudy or sunny skies through Thursday, according to the CWB.
