Seasonal winds to bring rain to northeast Taiwan: CWB

Strengthening northeasterly winds will bring rain to eastern and northeastern Taiwan on Sunday and send overnight low temperatures down to 20-22 degrees Celsius nationwide, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said Hualien and Taitung on the east coast and the Greater Taipei area will see scattered showers on Sunday, while the northeast and pockets along the east coast could see more sustained and heavy rains.

Areas south of Taoyuan, meanwhile, will see mostly cloudy to sunny skies on Sunday, according to the weather bureau.

Temperaturewise, daytime highs will reach 24-25 degrees in Greater Taipei and the northeast and 27-31 degrees in other regions, while overnight lows will drop to 20-22 degrees nationwide, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has forecast “good” air quality for the northern and eastern regions on Sunday, and “fair” air quality for central Taiwan.

However, air quality will be at levels “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in areas south of Yunlin County on the west coast, mainly due to high levels of PM2.5 particles and ozone pollutants, the EPA said.

As for next week, weather patterns will remain largely unchanged through Tuesday, according to Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

From Wednesday to Friday, a southward-moving weather system will bring scattered showers to northern and central Taiwan, and sporadic rain to the south, though the intensity and timing of the system was unclear, Wu said.

Based on current forecasts, rainfall is expected in parts of Taiwan during local elections next Saturday, he added.
