Spanish congressional delegation arrives in Taiwan, 1st in 3 years

A delegation from the lower house of Spain’s legislative branch, the Congress of Deputies, arrived in Taiwan Tuesday for a five-day visit, making it the first group from Spain’s Congress to visit Taiwan in over three years, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The cross-party delegation led by congresswoman Rosa Romero Sánchez, president of the Congress of Deputies’ Health Commission, includes five congressmen, Iván Espinosa, Jaime De Olano, Ricardo Tarno Blanco, José Ángel Alonso, and Juan Diego Requena, MOFA said in a press release.

During their visit from Jan. 10-14, they will meet with Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (???) and Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin (???), and a banquet will be held in their honor by Deputy Foreign Minister Tsai Ming-yen (???), the ministry said.

The Spanish deputies are scheduled to visit the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Economics Affairs, and the Council of Agriculture during their stay.

They will also visit the Hsinchu Science Park where they will gain an in-depth understanding of Taiwan’s development in related fields and how to enhance related bilateral exchanges, MOFA said.

The ministry welcomes the delegation’s visit, which is the first by a congressional delegation from the European country since November 2019.

MOFA also thanked Spain’s Congress of Deputies for expressing concern over cross-Taiwan Strait tensions in a statement passed by its Foreign Affairs Commission on Oct. 6, 2022.

According to MOFA, it was the first time in nearly 50 years the Spanish Congress passed a pro-Taiwan statement.
