Taiwanese groups to donate clothing, shoes to Haiti

Three Taiwanese organizations said Thursday that they plan to donate clothing and shoes to Haiti as the Caribbean ally deals with the aftermath of a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

The supplies donated jointly by Junior Chamber International Taiwan, World Taiwan Foundation and Step30 will be sent to Haiti in early September and arrive by the end of October, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The earthquake on Aug. 14 struck the southern part of Haiti and caused widespread destruction, killing over 2,200 people and injuring more than 12,200.

Taiwan’s government has already donated US$500,000 in relief funds to help Haiti, and has also sent oxygen concentrators, personal protective gear, face masks, sleeping bags and food, as requested by the Haitian government, MOFA said on Aug. 17.

Other non-governmental organizations in Taiwan, including the Tzu Chi Foundation and the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan), have also donated supplies including tents, sleeping bags, face masks, gloves, personal hygiene products and food, according to MOFA.
