Taiwanese teams take top prizes at RoboCup Junior challenge

Taipei, June 29 (CNA) Two Taiwanese teams won three top awards Monday at this year’s RoboCup Junior, a robot competition held annually for young students worldwide.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually from June 22-28.

The two teams representing Taiwan — Reset and Apex — won three top awards in the event’s Soccer League Simulation Challenge category, which included 39 teams from around the world.

Each team was required to program three fully autonomous digital robots to compete against another team in simulated matches. The robots had to detect the ball and score into a color-coded goal on a special field that resembles a real world football pitch, the organizer said.

Teams were also required to record videos to show their research results, as they are expected to share their discoveries with other participants and engage in good sportsmanship, regardless of culture, age or result in the competition, it added.

Reset was led by National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences student Su Chi-ping (???) and National Tsing Hua University student Kao Chih-chi (???), its other members being Benjamin Liang (???) of Taipei Fuhsing Private School, Thomas Tseng of Taipei American School, and Hoff Tsai (???) of Taipei Municipal Da’an Vocational High School.

The team won two awards — Individual Team First Place and SuperTeam First Place.

Apex, which won the category’s Best Video, included teammates Ethan Yao and Dorothy Chou of Taipei American School, and Eric Kao of Taipei Municipal Da’an Vocational High School.

According to the organizer, RoboCup Junior is educational in nature, while the tournament offers participants the chance to take part in international exchange programs and share the experience of meeting peers from abroad.
