Taiwan’s Chou Chieh-yu bags silver in World Games pool competition

Taiwanese pool player Chou Chieh-yu (???) won a silver medal at the World Games on Saturday in the United States, finishing second to Kelly Fisher of Great Britain in the women’s 9-ball competition.

In the final, Chou jumped off to an early 3-0 lead but was soon overtaken by Fisher, who was ranked as the world’s leading female player at the end of last year.

Fisher romped home with a 9-5 score to snag the gold medal in the women’s 9-ball category, and Chou came away with silver.

In a statement released by Taiwan’s Sports Administration, Chou said she had wanted to play in a defensive style against Fisher but had made an error in the second half of the match and was unable to recover.

Chou, 35, earned the silver medal after narrowly avoiding elimination last Thursday in the tournament’s opening round, when she squeaked out a comeback 9-6 win against Adriana Villar of Costa Rica.

The Taiwanese player then breezed past Eun-ji Park of South Korea 9-1 and Veronika Ivanovskaia of Germany 9-3 to advance to the final.

After winning the silver medal, Chou said she had been nervous at the start of the three-day competition, but she enjoyed her later matches and was satisfied with her overall performance, despite missing out on gold.

As of press time, Taiwan had bagged a total of 13 medals — one gold, six silvers and five bronzes — at the World Games, which are being held this year in Birmingham, Alabama, July 7-17.
