Taiwanese tennis ace Hsieh Su-wei (???) advanced to the second round of the women’s singles at the United States Open Tennis Championships Tuesday with a straight sets win over Claire Liu of the U.S.
Hsieh, ranked 81st in women’s singles in the world, was too strong for her opponent, ranked 19 places below her, who she was playing for the first time, running away with the match 6-1, 6-4.
During the match, Hsieh broke Liu’s serve five times, three times in the first set, which she won 6-1 in 30 minutes.
The second set was closer and in the seventh game Hsieh had to overcome three break points to hold her serve. In the 10th game she failed to convert five match points before winning the set 6-4 after 52 minutes with a service break.
Hsieh made a total of 12 unforced errors and one double fault in the match. She had a first serve percentage of 85 percent and first serve win rate of 76 percent.
In the second round, the Taiwanese player will meet the winner of the match between Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.
Hsieh is also involved in the women’s doubles at the US Open with her 2021 Wimbledon Championships partner, Elise Mertens of Belgium. Hsieh and Mertens, the top-rank duo in the world, are scheduled to play Anna Kalinskaya of Russia and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan on Thursday.
