Taiwan’s Hsu Yu-hsiou wins first ATP Challenge title in Sydney

Taiwanese tennis player Hsu Yu-hsiou (許育修) won his maiden ATP Challenger Tour men’s singles title on Sunday, defeating Marc Polmans of Australia 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in the final of ATP Challenger Sydney.

The win made Hsu, 23, the sixth Taiwanese player to win a men’s singles title on the ATP Challenger Tour after Jimmy Wang (王宇佐), Lu Yen-hsun (盧彥勳), Jason Jung (莊吉生), Tseng Chun-hsin (曾俊欣) and Wu Tung-lin (吳東霖).

Hsu did not drop a set in his four matches at the tournament in Sydney before securing the singles title Sunday.

In the first set of the final, the Taiwanese player had to dig deep to overcome three-time ATP Challenger champion Polmans 6-4. Polmans has a career high ATP singles ranking of World No. 116 achieved on Oct. 12 2020.

The match remained a close fought affair at the start of the second set, with Polmans working hard to hold his serve and taking a 4-2 lead.

However, Hsu was able to refocus and take back the initiative, forcing a tie-break and eventually winning the second set 7-6 (7-5).

Hsu previously won three junior boys’ doubles titles in 2017 at the Australian Open, the Wimbledon Championships and the U.S. Open. He has a current world singles ranking of No. 315.
