Taoyuan Pilots’ cheerleading squad opens tryout to all nationalities

The official cheerleading squad of Taiwan’s professional basketball club the Taoyuan Pilots, the new team of Filipino basketball sensation Ricci Rivero, will hold tryouts in August that will be open to aspiring cheerleaders of all nationalities, according to the club.

Women of all nationalities who are over 18 years of age and are not already signed cheerleaders of other clubs may apply, the Taoyuan Pilots said.

The club generated headlines across Taiwan and Philippines media in June and July when it was announced that the two-time UAAP champion, Rivero, will suit up for the club in Taiwan’s professional basketball P. LEAGUE+ 2022-2023 season as the first Southeast Asian to play as a world import.

Formed in 2021, the club’s cheerleading squad, known as the “Pilots Crew,” will hold tryouts to bring new members into the squad for the upcoming season as four members will be leaving, the Taoyuan Pilots said in a statement on Thursday.

Some positive traits the club is looking for in the cheerleader applicants include a passion for performing, a background in dance, a love for sports, and an interest in basketball games, the club said.

The tryouts will be held in two stages. Applicants must first apply online and submit basic information, a photo, a 30-second video self-introduction, a one-minute dance video, and a promo of the Pilots Crew by Aug. 17, the club said.

Applicants who pass the first stage and are selected to progress into the second stage will be notified on or before Aug. 22 for an interview on Aug. 24, the Taoyuan Pilots said.
