Temperature forecast to plunge to 10 degrees in northern Taiwan on Wednesday

Due to seasonal northeasterly winds, temperatures dropped to as low as 11 degrees Celsius in some areas of northern Taiwan Sunday morning, but they will fall even to 10 degrees in the north on Wednesday, when a cold front arrives on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Early Sunday morning, the lowest temperature recorded in low-lying parts of Taiwan was 11 degrees in Emei in Hsinchu County, as well as in Touwu and Xihu in Miaoli County, according to data posted on the CWB website.

As for the capital Taipei, the low was 15 degrees in Beitou, while in other areas of Taiwan it ranged from 13 to 16 degrees, according to the CWB data.

Daytime highs on Sunday will range from 18-20 degrees in northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan, and 23-27 degrees elsewhere, the CWB said.

Windward areas in the north and the east and mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan can expect sporadic, brief rainfall while the rest of the country will see cloudy or sunny skies, according to the CWB.

On Tuesday, a cold air will arrive in Taiwan, and will bring down temperatures in the north during the night, according to Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

The cold front’s effect is expected to be most apparent early Wednesday morning when Taipei could experience lows of around 12 degrees, while the lowest temperature in low-lying areas in northern Taiwan fall to around 9 degrees, Wu said.

On Saturday, the cold air mass will weaken slightly and the weather is expected to turn dry, with sunny skies forecast for western Taiwan, while the east will see scattered rainfall.

Between Wednesday and Friday, however, due to the effects of radiative cooling, morning and evening temperatures in areas south of Hsinchu as well as Chiayi might fall to 8-10 degrees, Wu said.

On Tuesday, there is a chance of snow on Taiping mountain in Yilan County at an elevation of nearly 2,000 meters as the temperature is expected to drop to zero degree with abundant moisture, Wu said.
