‘The Birth of Korea’ tops 1 million admissions less than a month since release

The documentary film “The Birth of Korea,” which sheds light on the life and politics of former President Rhee Syng-man, surpassed 1 million admissions, its distributer said Tuesday.

The cumulative number of admissions exceeded 1 million earlier in the day, Docustory said, less than a month after its release on Feb. 1.

The box office result is exceptional, given the generally less attention a documentary gets in theaters.

The film became the fourth Korean documentary to attract more than 1 million moviegoers, after “My Love, Don’t Cross That River” (2014), “Old Partner” (2009) and “Our President” (2017), which garnered 4.8 million, 2.93 million and 1.85 million viewers, respectively.

Director Kim Deok-young is set to hold a press conference Thursday about his plan for a sequel, with a goal to release it in March next year.
