Top 10 users at Hsinchu Science Park adopt water saving initiative

The 10 biggest water users at the Hsinchu Science Park have started a program to reduce their usage by 5 percent because of a lack of rainfall, said Wayne Wang (???), director-general of the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau.

The supply of water to the science park has been relatively stable compared to the average level of the past five years, Wang said, but the dry conditions recently have led the 10 companies to cut water consumption by 5 percent since March 1, Wang said.

Companies located at the park consume 140,000 cubic meters to 150,000 cubic meters of water daily, and that increases to 190,000 cubic meters if the park’s campuses in Zhunan, Longtan and Yilan are included.

The Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan sends 150,000 cubic meters of water per day to Hsinchu, Wang indicated, and work on an interconnecting pipeline linking the reservoir and the Second Baoshan Reservoir in Hsinchu is expected to be completed by 2026.

Meanwhile, water supplies in southern Taiwan are tight due to a drought on that part of the island. Starting from March 1, the Southern Science Park adopted a consumption control program to save 10 percent of water.
