Two shipments of smuggled beer worth NT$80 million seized in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung Customs seized two shipments of smuggled beer with a combined estimated retail value of NT$80 million (US$2.59 million) earlier this month, according to a statement issued by customs officials at Kaohsiung Port on Wednesday.

On Nov. 15, customs officers seized a record 934,575 cans of smuggled beer made in Hong Kong and Thailand with an estimated retail value of NT$50 million, transported from the container port of Nansha in southern China’s Guangdong province, the Customs said.

Kaohsiung Customs indicated that the beer was bound for Kota Kinabalu Port in East Malaysia.

A further eight transshipment containers from Nansha Port containing about 600,000 cans of undeclared beer with an estimated market value of NT$30 million were seized on Nov. 27, the statement added.

The second shipment of beer was found in eight 40-foot containers at the port that were declared to contain furniture also bound for Kota Kinabalu Port.

Customs officers identified the beer in the containers as not listed on the cargo manifest and seized it in accordance with the Customs Anti-smuggling Act and the Tobacco and Alcohol Administration Act.

Kaohsiung Customs indicated that the beer will be destroyed.
