Two tropical depressions that have formed in the Western Pacific could strengthen into tropical storms on Friday, but only one is forecast to bring rain to parts of Taiwan over the weekend, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
As of 2 p.m. Thursday, the tropical depressions were located in waters east of the Philippines and south of Japan, with the latter likely to move northward toward the country and not have any impact on Taiwan, the CWB said.
However, low pressure conditions brought by the tropical depression that formed east of the Philippines are forecast to bring rain to Taiwan, CWB forecaster Huang En-hung (黃恩鴻) said.
This depression could develop into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours and is forecast to pass across the northern Philippine island of Luzon and toward the South China Sea, Huang added.
As a result, there is a chance of heavy rain in northeastern Taiwan, coastal locations in Keelung and mountainous areas of greater Taipei on Saturday, Huang said.
