Itching to return, injured pitcher happy to be cheerleader during KBO postseason

SUWON, South Korea, After undergoing elbow operation in May, KT Wiz right-hander So Hyeong-jun is still months away from returning to the mound for his Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club.

But So has been with the team all along in spirit. With the Wiz on the verge of reaching the Korean Series, So said Sunday he couldn’t wait to rejoin the team.

“I’ve been dying to pitch again,” So told reporters at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, just south of Seoul, where the Wiz were preparing for the deciding Game 5 of the second round in the postseason against the NC Dinos. So has been working out in the gym at his home stadium during his rehab. “I miss the atmosphere of postseason games.”

The 22-year-old has been excellent in postseason play. When the Wiz won their first Korean Series title in 2021, So pitched six shutout innings for a 6-1 win in Game 2. The year before that, So had a 1.00 ERA in nine innings across two outings in the second round.

In this May 10, 2023, file photo provided by the KT Wiz, Wiz starter So Hyeong-jun pitches against the NC Dinos during a Korea Baseball Organization regular season game at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

But the pitching staff without So has been just fine. So was especially effusive about reliever Park Yeong-hyun, his high school teammate.

“I used to give him tips about mental preparation, but now I think I have to learn from him,” So said with a smile.

So played for South Korea at the World Baseball Classic in March but pitched poorly. Then two months after the tournament, he was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his pitching elbow, which led to his season-ending Tommy John surgery.

“I felt impatient at first, but I decided it was something I had to do at some point in my career,” said So, who is targeting a July 2024 return at the latest. “I’ve been getting plenty of rest and eating well.”

So plans to begin his throwing program later this week. In the meantime, he will continue to cheer on the Wiz.

If the Wiz beat the Dinos later Sunday, they will reach the Korean Series for the second time in franchise history.

When a reporter joked that So may be a surprise addition to the Korean Series roster for the Wiz, So responded with a smile, “I might be able to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.”

Young reliever displays veteran’s mettle to earn postseason series MVP award

SUWON, South Korea, In pitching all five games of a tight series in his first Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason, KT Wiz reliever Son Dong-hyun showcased the mettle of someone who’s been there and done that.

Son pieced together seven shutout innings in five games against the NC Dinos in the second round, helping the Wiz rally from a 2-0 series deficit to win the best-of-five battle in five games. They are now off to the Korean Series, the KBO’s version of the World Series, starting Tuesday.

KT Wiz reliever Son Dong-hyun poses with an oversized check after winning the MVP award for the second round in the Korea Baseball Organization postseason following a 3-2 win over the NC Dinos at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on Nov. 5, 2023.

Son’s masterpiece came Sunday in the Wiz’s 3-2 win in the deciding Game 5 at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, just south of Seoul. Son got the call earlier than expected — in the top of the sixth inning of a 2-2 game and with starter Wes Benjamin pitching relatively well.

Benjamin had given up a leadoff single and threw a ball to Kwon Hui-dong. Wiz manager Lee Kang-chul wasted no time in getting to the bullpen right there and then. And Son, who has been in Lee’s circle of trust this fall, rose to the challenge.

Kwon put down a sacrifice bunt, but Son retired the next two batters to kill that Dinos rally.

The right-hander came back out for the seventh, and got two quick outs before giving up a double to leadoff man Son Ah-seop. The hit amounted to nothing, as Son Dong-hyun got Seo Ho-cheol to fly out to right field.

Two other relievers, Park Yeong-hyun and Kim Jae-yoon, finished the job, and Son was credited with the win after the Wiz scored the go-ahead run in the bottom sixth.

Son, 22, enjoyed his best regular season to date this year, going 8-5 with career highs of 15 holds in 73 2/3 innings. And five games into his first run through the postseason, Son has justified manager Lee’s trust.

Son earned 39 out of 71 votes cast by media to earn his series MVP award, but said he never expected to be so honored.

“Honestly, I was just hoping we would win this game and the series,” Son said with a smile. “I was so nervous last night I barely got any sleep. It feels like a dream that we’re going to the Korean Series.”

Son said he has no physical issues to speak of, even after throwing seven, mostly high-stress, innings over the past seven days.

“I am just happy I could help the team at least a little bit,” Son said. “My body felt a little tight after we lost the first two games. But once we started winning, I didn’t feel any pain at all. I wanted to keep pitching.”

In an indication of his unflappable nature, Son said he wasn’t nervous about entering the game with a runner on.

“I didn’t feel any pressure not to give up runs, because I knew there were a lot of innings left,” Son said. “And plus, I didn’t think I was going to allow any runs.”

Single-minded focus helps injured player deliver in postseason decider

SUWON, South Korea, Limited to pinch-hitting duties this postseason because of a hamstring injury, KT Wiz outfielder Kim Min-hyuck made his precious few opportunities count.

Kim’s biggest moment came Sunday, as he delivered a game-tying, two-run double off the bench against the NC Dinos in Game 5 of the second round in the Korea Baseball Organization postseason. Kim’s two-bagger knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom fifth, and the Wiz added another in the sixth for a 3-2 win that sent them to the Korean Series.

Kim Min-hyuck of the KT Wiz celebrates a two-run double against the NC Dinos during Game 5 of the second round in the Korea Baseball Organization postseason at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on Nov. 5, 2023.

In this series, Kim went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks in five plate appearances, all of them off the bench.

Kim came into Sunday’s game earlier than expected, but with the Wiz down 2-0 and facing elimination, manager Lee Kang-chul rolled the dice.

The pinch hitter then made his skipper look smart, winning a six-pitch battle against Shin, who threw him six straight changeups.

“Early on, we weren’t doing much offensively,” Kim said of the Wiz being held hitless by Dinos starter Shin Min-hyeok through the first four innings. “The manager told me to start getting ready early just in case. I went into the cage to take a few swings, and then I was able to come through when I went up there.”

Kim batted .297 this regular season and has always been able to put the ball in play. That’s why Lee kept Kim stashed on the bench even with the outfielder’s injury.

Kim said he is still not close to 100 percent and running the bases and playing defense can still be problematic for him. But he proved in this series that he can still be a useful piece even when he’s compromised.

“When I got hurt toward the end of the regular season, I just assumed I’d be healthy by the time the postseason rolled around,” Kim said. “But then doctors told me I still had ways to go. So I decided to just focus on hitting, and I think it has helped me out so far.”

Dinos eliminated in KBO postseason with best pitcher out of action

SUWON, South Korea, After bowing out of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason Sunday, the NC Dinos were left with “what if” questions.

What if their best starter, Erick Fedde, had been able to start deciding Game 5 against the KT Wiz on Sunday? What if Fedde, who was dealing with shoulder fatigue, had been able to pitch in relief at least?

Fedde wasn’t just the Dinos’ No. 1 starter in the regular season. He was the best pitcher in the KBO, period. He won the pitching Triple Crown by leading the KBO with 20 wins, 209 strikeouts and a 2.00 ERA. He is the first foreign pitcher to accomplish that feat.

However, Fedde remained glued to the bench as the Dinos lost to the Wiz 3-2 at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, south of Seoul, on Sunday. Dinos manager Kang In-kwon had said prior to the game that Fedde would be available to pitch in relief, but that didn’t materialize.

The Wiz are off to the Korean Series, and the Dinos are going home.

“He tried to get ready but he said his body still felt heavy. So that was that,” Kang said after the loss.

Fedde ended up pitching in only one game this postseason. And it was a dominant one at that, which only adds to the frustration for the Dinos and their fan base that, if Fedde had been able to pitch at least once more in this series, it could have gone in their favor.

Fedde struck out 12 in six innings as the Dinos took the first game 9-5 on Monday. And he would have been in line to start Sunday on regular rest. And the top-of-the-rotation type pitchers like Fedde get paid exactly for games like this, as a win on Sunday would have sent the Dinos to the Korean Series.

And yet, the Dinos never got to use Fedde again.

NC Dinos pitcher Erick Fedde (L) high-fives a teammate during Game 4 of the second round in the Korea Baseball Organization postseason against the KT Wiz at Changwon NC Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, on Nov. 3, 2023.

In his final regular season start on Oct. 16, Fedde was struck in the right forearm by a batted ball. The Dinos’ first postseason game was Oct. 19, and he would not have been available for that game anyway because of the quick turnaround.

The Dinos won that game, a wild card showdown against the Doosan Bears, by 14-9 and advanced to the next round against the SSG Landers. That series began Oct. 22, but Fedde was still not ready.

And before Game 2 against the Landers on Oct. 23, Kang confidently announced Fedde would take the ball for Game 3 two days later, on Oct. 25. It would be nine days after Fedde’s final regular season outing, and Kang said the team couldn’t afford to wait for their top starter much longer.

However, immediately after Game 2, Kang announced Fedde wouldn’t be able to pitch in Game 3 because of lingering arm discomfort.

The Dinos won Game 3 without Fedde to complete the three-game sweep of the Landers. More importantly, the Dinos earned themselves an additional four days off before the start of the next series, against the Wiz.

With plenty of rest, Fedde finally got the ball for Game 1 against the Wiz on Monday. He showed no ill effects from his arm issues or the extended layoff in his 12-strikeout performance.

NC Dinos pitcher Erick Fedde smiles in the dugout during Game 1 of the second round in the Korea Baseball Organization postseason against the KT Wiz at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on Oct. 30, 2023.

But then the mysterious shoulder fatigue came up. After the Dinos lost Game 4 on Friday to allow the Wiz to even up the series at two games apiece, it seemed safe to assume Kang would tap Fedde to try to save the Dinos’ season in Game 5.

But in his post-game press conference Friday, Kang said he would have to check Fedde’s health further and wait until Saturday morning to settle on his Game 5 starter.

Kang went with Shin Min-hyeok, who did an admirable job holding the Wiz to two runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. But with the Dinos’ bats having gone cold over the past two games, the margin of error was minimal.

Except for his official press conference after Game 1, Fedde declined to speak to the media during the entire postseason. At that presser, Fedde said he “felt strong” after the six-inning outing, but he never pitched again.

Fedde’s absence isn’t the sole reason that the Dinos couldn’t finish off the Wiz after winning the first two games of this series. But there’s little doubt that he could have made a difference Sunday.

Fedde just might have pitched his last game for the Dinos. The former Washington Nationals starter could attract some suitors from Major League Baseball following his great season in the KBO.

KLHK introduces benefits of carbon for economic improvement in Papua

Sorong (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) introduced the use of carbon in the forestry sector to improve the economy in Southwest Papua Province (PBD) through the socialization of carbon trading in the Papua and Maluku regional forestry sectors.Secretary of the Directorate General of Sustainable Forest Management (PHL) of KLHK Drasospolino in Sorong, Sunday, explained the introduction of benefits through carbon trading in the forestry sector, which has been stipulated through Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 7 of 2023 about procedures for carbon trading. s a result, stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and the community can understand the meaning of carbon and its economic value, followed by entering carbon trading. Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 7 of 2023, he said, is Indonesia’s commitment to achieve Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). “This is important to convey so that the benefits of carbon auctions are truly well understood and then followed by efforts to optimize carbon to support economic growth,” Drasospolino explained. The approach through socialization is considered important so that stakeholders and business actors can understand the procedures, requirements, and calculations when viewing carbon trading results. “Business actors or anyone else can also participate in carbon trading activities in the forestry sector because the opportunities for economic growth are there,” the Secretary of the Directorate General said. He said that, in general, there are two mechanisms for carbon trading in the forestry sector: emissions trading and greenhouse gas emissions offset. Because, he said, the Southwest Papua province has a great opportunity to contribute to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both through direct and offset emission reductions. Southwest Papua has an area of forest that has the potential to become a significant emission offset area. “Carbon trading is also an effort to support climate change control through carbon economic value (NEK),” he explained. He believes that carbon trading can reduce emissions by 32.8 percent to the maximum.

Ministry asks SW Papua to bolster collaboration for stunting reduction

Sorong, SW Papua (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Home Affairs reminded Southwest Papua Province to continue to bolster collaboration in order to accelerate stunting reductions in the province. The ministry’s Director General of Regional Development Guidance, Restuardy Daud, explainedhere on Sunday that an important thing that needs to be implemented in stunting reduction efforts is strengthening the collaboration of all parties for jointly contributing to stunting reduction acceleration programs. “This is essential to do by unifying thoughts and concepts in different main tasks and functions so that efforts to reduce stunting can be carried out jointly,” he said. The goal, he continued, is to ensure the eight convergence actions against stunting can be realized maximally at the provincial level as well as district and city levels. “So far, out of six provinces in Papua, Southwest Papua’s stunting handling is very good,” he remarked. He admitted that every province has different achievements in stunt handling. He noted that the cultural and geographical aspects between one region and another in Papua become a challenge in stunt handling. For stunting handling, the Health Office of Southwest Papua Province has allocated a budget of Rp20 billion (around US$1.28 million) sourced from the province’s regional budget (APBD). Head of the Southwest Papua Health Office, Netty Howai, explained that the budget is a concrete effort by the provincial government to implement strategic programs to reduce stunting rates in the province. She explained that one of the forms of realization of the stunting reduction priority programs is that her office has distributed complementary foods for babies, under-five children, and pregnant women in five districts and one city. Furthermore, the other effort that the office has made is launching the nutrition kitchen program in all districts and cities in November 2023. Howai also informed me that Southwest Papua’s stunting prevalence in October 2023 stood at 12 percent, a decline from 19.9 percent on July 20, 2023. Stunting reduction is a priority program of the Indonesian government, which is aiming to bring down stunting prevalence to 14 percent by 2024. Indonesia’s stunting prevalence declined by 2.8 percentage points to 21.6 percent in 2022 from 24.4 percent in 2021, as per the 2022 Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI).
