CAL to introduce 2-piece checked baggage limit on all routes

Passengers on all international routes operated by China Airlines (CAL) and its subsidiary Mandarin Airlines will be limited to two pieces of checked baggage from Aug. 2, the flagship carrier announced Tuesday.

Under the new system — which is already in use on CAL’s North American routes — economy class passengers can check a maximum of two bags weighing up to 23 kilograms each, with the per-bag limit set at 28 kg for premium economy ticket holders, and 32 kg for those in business class.

CAL described the introduction of the piece-based system on its routes covering Asia, Europe, and Oceania as a “service upgrade,” saying that, despite capping the number of bags, the total weight allowance for passengers’ checked baggage would increase.

Premium economy passengers, for example, will now be able to check an extra 21 kg when compared with the previous 35-kg total baggage limit, according to CAL.

The carrier added that the standardization of checked baggage allowances also made it easier for passengers to plan ahead.
