SEOUL, A labor union comprising workers of four Samsung Group affiliates will officially set sail next month, industry sources said Wednesday.

The unionized workers held their first intercompany labor union meeting earlier in the day to make an internal announcement of the union’s establishment, according to the sources.

The Samsung affiliates are Samsung Electronics Co.’s device experience (DX) division, Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Samsung Display Co. and Samsung Biologics Co.

SEOUL, Japan’s antitrust regulator has approved a 1.8 trillion-won (US$1.34 billion) merger deal between Korean Air Co. and Asiana Airlines Inc., according to the companies Wednesday, moving the merger process between South Korea’s two full-fledged air carriers one step further.

Internet portal operators Naver and Kakao also traded lower, plummeting 3.10 percent and 2.39 percent, respectively.

President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday vetoed the Special Act on Itaewon Disaster. The president’s decision was foreshadowed on Jan. 9, when members of the governing People Power Party (PPP) stormed out of the main hall in the legislature before the majority Democratic Party (DP) unilaterally passed it.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo underscored that the special act had to be vetoed because of the unrestricted powers of the special investigation committee – such as its order for suspects to accompany investigators and its direct request for search and seizure warrants from the court. The prime minister criticized the special act for possible violations of basic rights stipulated in our Constitution.

Han also expressed concerns about a lack of fairness in appointing 11 members of the special investigation committee. For instance, among the 11 members of the special committee, four each should be recommended by the PPP and DP, and the remaining three by the National Assembly speaker from the DP through his consulta
tions with related parties. In that case, the special committee will likely be comprised of members close to the DP. If such a committee wields enormous powers like search and seizure, they can be abused to launch a political offensive in the name of investigative activities. It certainly goes too far if the special committee can look into investigation records of even suspended cases.

The PPP denounces the special act for “trying to create jobs for former democracy fighters,” or current DP lawmakers. In fact, a large number of people from liberal civic groups became members of the special investigation committee on the 2014 Sewol ferry tragedy. If they had achieved significant findings, it could have been better. But they didn’t – even after spending more than 70 billion won ($52.6 million) over eight years.

SEOUL, A local consortium was selected as the new operator of the 28 gigahertz (GHz) band of the fifth-generation network (5G) in South Korea on Wednesday, the science ministry said, becoming the country’s fourth mobile carrier.

Stage X, a consortium of Stage Five, a communications affiliate of tech giant Kakao Corp., and other unidentified companies, will be the fourth operator of the 5G network.

Currently, three major mobile carriers — SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. — are the country’s sole operators of the network.

Stage X won the 28 GHz band on the fifth day of the auction against Sejong Telecom Inc. and Mobile Consortium, writing in the highest bid of 430.1 billion won (US$322.1 million), according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

In the previous auction in 2018, the country’s three major mobile carriers — SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. — won the same spectrum in the low 200 billion-won range.

However, these three operators lost the license for the new 28 GHz spectr
um last year due to insufficient investment.

As a response, the South Korean government has taken steps to introduce a new operator to foster competition in an industry traditionally dominated by the three major carriers.

Stage X will be required to build 6,000 base stations nationwide within the first three years and implement measures to address frequency congestion and interference.

“We will work to become a new brand in the communications market and facilitate fresh and innovative changes in the market by boosting the 5G network service,” Stage X CEO Seo Sang-won said.
