CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 18,003 new COVID-19 cases, 48 deaths

Taiwan reported 18,003 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, all but 454 of which were domestic infections, and 48 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals whose deaths were reported on Monday ranged in age from their 50s to over 90. Among them, 27 had not been vaccinated with any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 47 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Severe, moderate infections

Meanwhile, the CECC said that 40 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 46 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Of the 4,233,812 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,450 have been classified as severe infections, and 10,757 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 17.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases on Monday with 2,975, followed by Taichung with 2,236, and Taoyuan 1,903.

Kaohsiung reported 1,883 cases, Taipei 1,613, Tainan 1,327, Changhua County 883, Hsinchu County 543, Pingtung County 518, Miaoli County 481, Yunlin County 467, Yilan County 409, Hsinchu City 400, and Chiayi County 345.

Regarding the 454 new imported COVID-19 cases on Monday, CECC official Chou Jih-haw (???) said the relatively high number was due to recently confirmed cases not having been logged into the COVID-19 statistics database system.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,282,777 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,265,955 domestic infections.

With the 48 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country has risen to 8,224.
