CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 31,547 new COVID-19 cases, 76 deaths

Taiwan reported 31,547 new COVID-19 infections Sunday and 76 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deaths reported Sunday involved individuals who ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but three had underlying health issues, while 41 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The 31,547 cases were 10.8 percent lower than on Oct. 23, the CECC said. Case numbers are often compared on a week-over-week basis because they tend to be lower on weekends and Mondays than on other days of the week.

For the week ending on Oct. 30, case numbers were down 9.8 percent from the previous week but the 449 deaths during the week were 8.2 percent higher than during the Oct. 17-Oct. 23 period.

Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 77 new cases classified as severe and 141 as moderate.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 infections, with 5,356, while Taichung had 4,292, Kaohsiung 3,723, Taoyuan 3,138, Taipei 2,925 and Tainan 2,915, according to the CECC.

Changhua County reported 1,597 cases, Pingtung County 1,004, Hsinchu County 810, Hsinchu City 799, Miaoli County 722, Yunlin County 719, Nantou County 699 and Chiayi County 620.

Yilan County reported 533 cases, Keelung 473, Chiayi City 393, Hualien County 318, Taitung County 210, Kinmen County 157, Penghu County 89 and the Matsu Islands eight, according to CECC data.

Taiwan has recorded 7,690,110 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, including 36,347 classified as imported, and 12,772 deaths from the disease.
