Magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocks eastern Taiwan, 3rd on Tuesday

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred in waters off Taiwan’s northeastern coast at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, the third temblor to shake the island that day, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 78.4 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 108.7 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Yilan and Hualien counties, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Taoyuan, New Taipei, Hsinchu County, Taichung, Nantou County, Miaoli County, Changhua County, and Yunlin County, the bureau said.

The quake was the third to shake Taiwan on Tuesday, following a magnitude 4.4 earthquake off the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, and one measuring 4.1 on the Richter Scale in Hualien County in the east.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries caused by any of Tuesday’s earthquakes as of press time.
