PPP unveils campaign pledges on climate change, vows to boost renewable energy sector

The ruling People Power Party (PPP) on Tuesday unveiled a package of campaign pledges focused on tackling climate change and promoting renewable energy sources, ahead of the April general elections.

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon announced the promises at a book cafe in Seongsu-dong in southeastern Seoul, saying climate policies do not translate immediately into votes, but it is something that politicians must do for the country’s future.

The pledges include doubling the size of state funds reserved for climate change response from the current 2.4 trillion won (US$18 billion) to five trillion won by 2027 to support companies reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding investments and issuance of loans promoting environmentally friendly activities.

On a parliamentary level, the PPP plans to turn the existing special committee on climate change into a permanent one to better coordinate with the government on climate issues and deliberate related bills.

The party also suggested revising the electricity pricin
g system to boost consumption of non-carbon energy sources, like nuclear and wind power, and expanding investments in the hydrogen energy sector.
