Rare plume of volcanic gas spotted off Guishan Island

A large plume of sulfur-rich surface gas was spotted off the volcanic Guishan Island in Yilan County Tuesday, believed to have been caused by rocks or tectonic activity unblocking underwater hydrothermal vents.

Hsu Yuan-li (???), a Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration official, said that similar clouds of escaped volcanic gas were a common scene around Guishan until the underwater vents surrounding the island were covered by falling rocks in around 2005.

On Oct. 28, 2021, plumes reaching as high as four stories appeared near Guishan Island, four days after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake.

According to the administration’s website, the plumes of sulfur-rich gas are just one of several natural spectacles that can be seen on Guishan Island and the surrounding waters, along with underwater hot springs.
