Taiwan’s Legislature condemns Russian invasion of Ukraine

Taiwan’s Legislature on Tuesday issued a cross-party statement denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and calling on the government to participate in international efforts aimed at bringing an end to the conflict.

The joint statement, issued by Deputy Speaker Tsai Chi-chang (???) on behalf of the Legislature’s majority and minority parties, said Russia’s unilateral use of military force had resulted in casualties and displacement among Ukrainian citizens, and was “unacceptable” to the Taiwanese people.

The parties “strongly condemned” the Russian government’s “illegal” use of force under the Charter of the United Nations and its violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territory, describing it as a severe blow to the international order, peace and stability.

The Legislature supported steps taken by the international community to halt the invasion, and urged Taiwan’s government to participate in countermeasures to that end, the statement said, while also calling for an end to hostilities and the resumption of peace negotiations.

The statement also asked the government to remain in close contact with any Taiwan nationals who remain in Ukraine and to assist in their evacuation, as well as to provide humanitarian aid, including medical supplies, which are direly needed in Ukraine.

Taiwanese evacuated

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday that it has so far evacuated 36 Taiwan nationals from Ukraine, while estimating that an additional 17 Taiwanese remain in the country.

Late Monday, Taiwan’s government flew a shipment of 27 metric tons of medical supplies to Frankfurt, from where they will be transferred for distribution in Ukraine, according to MOFA.
